Massage and Spa Sexual Abuse

Massage therapy can be an important part of physical rehabilitation after an injury, a pain management tool, and an outlet for relaxation. With countless privately owned spas and massage therapy chains across the country, most people have access to massage therapy services by trusted licensed professionals. What consumers don’t expect, and should never have to experience, is inappropriate behavior, physical boundaries being crossed as part of a massage, and even sexual abuse from massage therapists during an appointment.

Given that massage therapy is a physically intimate environment by its nature, it can be difficult to determine when an experience can be considered abnormal or when a line has been crossed. It’s important to remember that permission to touch your body as part of a massage therapy appointment is not permission to violate it in any way. When possible, it’s important for clients to understand what standard practices are during a massage prior to the appointment. The massage therapist should always ask before they touch an area that you may consider to be sensitive, such as your hips, chest, or glutes. At no point during an appointment should a massage therapist ever touch your genital area.

If you are getting a therapeutic massage and feel uncomfortable, speak up if you are able. If you were inappropriately touched or sexually assaulted by a massage therapist, report the abuse to local authorities if you are able to do so.

Our expertise

We have experience working with survivors of abuse by massage therapists as well as survivors of many other types of sexual assault. We currently represent individuals who were abused at multiple national massage chain locations, but our representation does not stop there. With our deep experience in representing survivors in abuse cases taking place in various settings, we can provide the necessary expertise to hold all responsible parties accountable for their negligence and failure to act.

We have represented sexual abuse and assault survivors in high-profile cases such as the Larry Nassar litigation against The U.S. Olympic Committee, Michigan State University, and USA Gymnastics, sexual assault survivors at the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan, boy scout survivors abused at camps, and clergy abuse survivors nationwide. We also represented a rape survivor in a case against Hilton Management LLC that resulted in a $44.6 million verdict in November 2021, which is believed to be the largest sexual assault verdict against a hotel chain.
