Child Sexual Abuse at Camps

Whenever children spend extended periods of time at camps, away from their guardians, there is an increased risk of sexual abuse taking place. There are unfortunately many instances in which sexual predators have used summer camps, sports camps, or religious camps to prey on children in an environment in which they are isolated from their parents and other adults they trust. According to Crime Stoppers of Houston, there have been over 1,000 cases of children who were sexually abused at children’s camps over the past 10-15 years, though the true number of kids abused is likely much higher, as many survivors never come forward.

For example, widespread abuse occurred at Karolyi Ranch, a gymnastics camp in Texas for top female gymnasts and an official training facility of the US Women’s National Team. For decades, sports doctor Larry Nassar sexually abused countless young women and girls attending the camp while the camp owners and faculty turned a blind eye. Karolyi Ranch closed in 2018 after Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in federal prison.

Abuse at the hands of a camp counselor, trusted coach, teacher, or religious leader can be confusing for a child, especially in cases where a child attended the camp for a long duration or frequented the camp over multiple years and the abuse became routine.
